 Travel from Marseille to Kuopio


Hi everyone, we are 5 exchange students who went to Finland for our Erasmus and we created this blog to tell you everything about our semester in Finalnd starting with our long travel from the south of France !

Departure - Marseille: 

We left Marseille Saint Charles station at 12 noon on Tuesday 02 January 2024. We found ourselves with our big suitcases for a new 5-month experience in Finland. We're off to Paris for our next stop.
                                                                         
First stop - Paris:

After almost four hours on the train, we arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle station at around 4 a.m. We got to the airport as our flight was at 7.30 a.m.. We started to check in our hold luggage and then made our way to the boarding lounge. We had to wait for over two hours before boarding the plane for Helsinki.

Second stop- Helsinki :

Three hours later, we arrived in Finland! We had a very pleasant flight and met a very nice flight attendant :)
We arrived in the capital at 11.30am (we have an hour's time difference with France) and had to wait until 6am the next day to catch our last train. We went out to eat and visited the capital at night... It was snowing and the temperature was -30 degrees, so we were very surprised by the cold, even though we had prepared ourselves. In fact, we arrived in Finland in the middle of a very cold period.

Arrival - Kuopio:

We had a 4-hour train journey before finally arriving at our destination on Wednesday 03 January 2024 at around 10am. Before arriving at our appartment, we had to pick up the keys in the city centre, before finally settling into our new home for six months!
We went to visit our new university, the Savonian University of Applied Sciences, as we had our pre-baccalaureate the next day, and took the opportunity to pick up our survival kit (kit provided by the school including crockery, stoves, sheets, etc.).

Ice skating in Finland

 Today we're going to discover one of our favorite and best-known activities in Finland: ice skating .  Ice tracks with the town of Kuopio at sunset Ice skating in Finland : Ice skating is very popular in Finland. During the winter (October-April), there are ice rinks in every town. Many Finnish schools even have their own rinks. So it's easy to skate in winter.  You can also skate on frozen lakes. However, the lakes are covered in snow, so machines are needed to remove the snow. In Kuopio, from January to March, there are large circuits maintained on the ice.  When we came to Finland, we bought ice skates for the first week. So every week we go ice-skating on Lake Kuopio.  Kuopio Ice marathon : The town of Kuopio is well known in Finland in winter for hosting the Finland Ice Marathon. Finnish roads

    Finnish roads Despite Finland's harsh winters and snowy roads, the country has very few accidents. Several reasons explain this.  First, Finland spends a lot on roads, ensuring they're well-maintained by clearing snow and seeding the ground with specific gravel to deal with snow and ice. Also, Finnish drivers receive tough training, especially on driving safely in winter.
